REFLECTION OF THE SUN (SOLKATT)
Reflection of the sun (Solkatt) is an experimental and innovative BA project in
textile design by Johanna Samuelsson at The Swedish School of Textiles 2014.
By working with the techniques woven shibori and foil print, the interaction
between patterned surfaces and light is explored in a textile decoration.
The work is a meeting between construction of textiles and treatment of
surface, between industrial digital jacquard weaving and printing by hand,
between shibori and modern technology.
Additional pattern threads that are woven with shrink yarn create the patterned
structures. When the fabric is exposed to heat, the fabric molds itself. This creates
a resist that is printed with foil.
The textiles are inspired by the sun, how the intense light dance, reflect and glitter
over a surface.
Material: Cotton warp, polyester weft with additional pattern threads in shrinking yarn.
Technique: Woven shibori, digital jacquard weave, foil print by hand.
